After experiencing intense analysis paralysis, a common occurrence in the Kam household, we settled on chasing the warm sun down south.
The pandemic requires serious travel-related problem solving! To limit stops on the road, we loaded our 4Runner with lots of dehydrated food, a complete bathroom system (if you want to know, ask), an audiobook, and of course, our rooftop tent! Not to mention glacier gear, skis, climbing gear, and running gear. 😆

Total Distance: 13.6 miles
Total Gain: 6,657 feet
DAY 3-5: SOUTH SISTER AND BROKEN TOP
In the morning, we drove to Bend, Oregon. We got to the trailhead by 3pm, packed for a 3-day backpacking trip, and hiked into the Green Lakes basin.
Andrew mastered the fine art of boot skiing 😂
After 5 hours and 20 minutes of moving time, we made it back to camp in time for dinner, a water filter shower, route study, and early sleep.
To avoid the heat, we woke up at 4:30am. The approach was easy, and after about an hour of hiking we were on the ridge to Broken Top.
Going up the spine involved exposed Class 3 scrambling.
We roped up for the last 500 feet.
I belayed Andrew for the last 60 feet to the summit. I wasn’t interested in climbing the summit block and enjoyed my ledge.
We drove into Bend, got takeout Cafe Yumm (our fav!), and found a free campground on a forest road.

In the afternoon we drove to the Pole Creek Trailhead, ate dinner in our tent (bad mosquitos!) and went to bed early.
DAY 8: MIDDLE SISTER
We woke up at 3am, had breakfast, gazed at the comet Neowise, and hiked for 2.5 hours before hitting the glacier.
We got off the glacier quickly, took a lunch break on some rocks, and booked it back to the car.

Total Distance: 15.5 miles

We woke up at 5am and made our way to the June Lake Trailhead.
There was no water between Chocolate Falls and Toutle River (almost a 9 mile stretch), and Andrew’s water bottle exploded when it fell out of his vest early in the run. He had to ration a 12 oz. bottle for the first 1/3 of the day!
OKAY, only 20 miles left! Time to go through the blast zone. The views were so magnificent that we slowed our pace to a stroll to take it all in.
After crossing the blast zone, only about 12 miles left! Couldn’t be too hard, right…?
